Template Title: My Understanding of Art: Then and Now
Materials:
1 whole sheet of bond paper;
pen (black or blue ink)
ruler
any coloring materials (optional)
Instructions / Activity Guide:
This activity helps you reflect on how your understanding of art has changed after being introduced to the subject of Art Appreciation.
Step 1: Prepare Your Paper
Divide the paper vertically into two equal columns. Label the left column “Then” and the right column “Now.”
Step 2: Write Your Reflections
In each column, write a short reflection of 5–7 complete sentences. Write clearly and honestly. There are no right or wrong answers—this activity values your personal thoughts and experiences. You may write in a paragraph or in a bullet form.
Guide Questions:
Then:
What did you think art was before taking this subject?
Did you believe art was only about drawing or painting?
Who did you think could create art?
Now:
How do you define art after learning about it?
How do creativity, imagination, and human expression relate to art?
Can everyday objects, activities, or traditions be considered art? Why?
Step 3: Add a Symbol or Sketch
At the bottom of the paper or between the two columns, draw a simple symbol or small sketch that represents what art means to you now. Artistic skill is not required.
Examples of Symbols:
Heart – art as expression of feelings
Light bulb – art as creativity or ideas
Camera – art as capturing life
Music notes and paintbrush – art in different forms
Sample Response (Short Example):
Then:
Before taking this course, I thought art was only about drawing and painting. I believed that only talented people could create art. I did not consider music or traditions as art. Art, for me, was something found in museums. I rarely connected art to my daily life.
Now: I understand that art is a form of human expression. Anyone can create art through ideas and emotions. Art exists in music, films, traditions, and everyday life. It reflects culture and society. Art helps me understand myself and others.
Reminder:
Write neatly and organize your work clearly. This activity focuses on reflection, not artistic skill. Be honest and thoughtful in expressing your ideas.
Enjoy!
