Instructions / Activity Guide:
This activity helps you analyze and interpret an artwork using four levels of image reading: Basic Information, Iconic Plane, Semiotic Plane, Contextual Plane, and Evaluative Plane. You will examine your chosen artwork and explain its meaning clearly and thoughtfully.
Step 1: Prepare Your Paper
Divide your paper into sections similar to the sample:
Top Section: Basic Information
Lower Sections:
• Iconic Plane
• Semiotic Plane
• Contextual Plane
• Evaluative Plane
Step 2: Basic Information (Top Section)
Write the basic details of your chosen artwork:
Title of the Work
Artist
Medium and Technique
Dimensions / Measurement (if available)
Date of the Work
Provenance (origin or location)
Step 3: Iconic Plane (What do you see?)
Describe the visible elements in the artwork. Do not interpret yet.
Guide Questions:
What objects, people, or setting can you see?
What is happening in the image?
What details are noticeable?
Example:
You may describe people, objects, environment, colors, and actions shown.
Step 4: Semiotic Plane (What does it mean?)
Explain the symbols and meanings found in the artwork.
Guide Questions:
What do the objects or actions symbolize?
What ideas or messages are being suggested?
What emotions or themes are represented?
Example:
Farming may symbolize life, survival, or hard work. Light may symbolize hope.
Step 5: Contextual Plane (What is the background?)
Explain the historical, cultural, or social context of the artwork.
Guide Questions:
When and where was it created?
What cultural or social situation does it reflect?
What do you know about the artist?
Example:
The artwork may reflect Filipino rural life and traditions during a certain period.
Step 6: Evaluative Plane (What is your judgment?)
Give your personal evaluation and appreciation of the artwork.
Guide Questions:
Is the artwork effective? Why or why not?
What do you like about it?
What value or importance does it have?
Example:
You may discuss beauty, meaning, emotional impact, or cultural value.
Step 7: Organize and Design
Use boxes or sections similar to the sample layout
Write clearly and neatly
Keep explanations organized and easy to read
Sample Guide (Short Example):
Basic Information:
Title: Planting Rice
Artist: Fernando Amorsolo
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Iconic Plane:
Farmers are planting rice in a field. There are trees, water, and houses in the background.
Semiotic Plane:
The farmers symbolize hard work and cooperation. The peaceful setting represents harmony with nature.
Contextual Plane:
The painting reflects Filipino rural life where farming is important for survival and culture.
Evaluative Plane:
The artwork is meaningful because it shows the beauty of everyday life. It highlights the importance of farmers in society.
Reminder:
Iconic = What you see
Semiotic = What it means
Contextual = Background and history
Evaluative = Your judgment
Focus on clear understanding, not long explanations.
