Plate #8 (1 of 4)
Topic: Subjects and Contents of Art
Template Title: Analyzing the Subject, Content, and Form of an Artwork
Materials:
1 whole sheet of bond paper;
pen (black or blue ink);
ruler;
any coloring materials (optional)
Instructions / Activity Guide:
This activity helps you understand the difference between the subject, content, and form of an artwork. You will analyze something that personally interests you and organize your ideas following the format shown in the example.
Step 1: Prepare Your Paper
Using a ruler, divide the paper into two vertical sections.
• The left section should be smaller.
• The right section should be larger.
Step 2: Define the Terms (Left Section – Smaller Space)
On the left side, write brief definitions in your own words:
Subject of Art – What the artwork is about. It refers to the visible topic, theme, or main idea being presented.
Content of Art – The meaning, message, emotion, or interpretation behind the artwork. It explains what the artwork expresses or communicates.
(You may also add a short definition of Form of Art – How the artwork is made, including its medium, elements, and artistic structure.)
Keep definitions short (2–3 sentences each).
Step 3: Choose Your Artwork (Right Section – Larger Space)
Look for something that genuinely interests you. It may be:
• A song
• A dance move (describe it clearly)
• A hobby (e.g., painting, gaming, cooking, photography)
• A short film
• A poem
• A performance
• Any creative work
Write the title of your chosen artwork or activity.
Step 4: Analyze Using the Template (Right Section)
Organize your analysis into three parts:
SUBJECT
What is it about? Describe the main topic or focus in 2–4 sentences.
CONTENT
What is the message? What emotions, ideas, or meaning does it communicate? Write 3–5 sentences explaining the deeper meaning.
FORM
How is it made? Identify the type of art (visual, performing, literary, etc.) and describe how it is presented (music, movement, colors, materials, structure, rhythm, etc.). Write 2–3 sentences.
You may highlight keywords, underline important ideas, or organize them in boxes similar to the example shown.
Sample Guide (Short Example):
Chosen Artwork: A Song About Moving On
Subject:
The song is about finding happiness after heartbreak.
Content:
It expresses emotional growth and healing. The lyrics show that pain can lead to strength and self-discovery. The message encourages listeners to choose hope instead of bitterness.
Form:
It is a musical performance combining melody, harmony, and poetic lyrics. The rhythm and soft instrumentals support the emotional message.
Step 5: Presentation and Design
You may add small visual elements, light colors, or headings similar to the example provided. Artistic skill is not required. Focus on clear explanation and organization.
Reminder:
Make sure your explanations clearly distinguish between subject (what it is about) and content (what it means). Neatness, clarity, and depth of understanding are more important than decoration.
Enjoy!
