Plate #9 (2 of 4)
Topic: Types of Subject
Template Title: Defining Subject Types
Materials:
1 whole sheet of bond paper;
pen (black or blue ink);
ruler;
any coloring materials (optional)
Instructions / Activity Guide:
This activity helps you understand the two major types of subject in art: Representational and Non-representational. You will define each type and relate them to the artwork you analyzed in Template #8.
Step 1: Prepare Your Paper
Using a ruler, divide the paper vertically into two equal sections.
• Label the left side: Representational (With Subject)
• Label the right side: Non-Representational (Without Subject)
Step 2: Write the Definitions
On the left side, write the definition:
Representational Art – Refers to any artwork that represents objects, people, places, or events occurring in the real world. It is also called Figurative Art.
On the right side, write the definition:
Non-Representational Art – Refers to an artwork that does not directly represent real-world objects, people, or events. It focuses more on elements like color, sound, shape, or emotion. It is also called Non-Figurative Art.
Write the definitions in your own words (2–3 sentences each).
Step 3: Apply It to Your Template #8 Content
Using the same artwork, song, hobby, dance, or creative piece you analyzed in Template #8, explain how it can be viewed as:
• Representational
• Non-representational
Write 2–4 sentences for each side explaining why.
Guide Questions:
Representational Side:
Does your artwork show real people, objects, events, or settings?
What real-life elements are visible or clearly described?
Non-Representational Side:
Does your artwork express emotions, moods, or ideas that are not physical objects?
How do colors, sounds, movements, or symbols communicate meaning?
Abstract Art
Is there still resemblance to reality in your abstract artwork?
What real-life elements are visible or clearly described?
Step 4: Organize and Design
You may highlight keywords, underline important phrases, or add simple visual examples. Keep the layout clear and balanced.
Sample Guide (Short Example):
Chosen Artwork: A Song About Moving On
Representational:
The music video shows real people and real-life settings like streets and rooms. The subject includes a relationship and emotional change, which are real-life experiences.
Non-Representational:
The melody and rhythm express sadness and healing without showing a physical object. The emotions are communicated through sound and symbolism rather than direct images.
Reminder:
Make sure you clearly distinguish between art that represents real-world subjects and art that focuses on abstract elements or emotions. Clarity of explanation is more important than decoration.
Enjoy!
